Major Movie Review (4.25/5)

Worth a watch for second time

Like most of the films where Adivi Sesh played the hero had the story and screenplay scripted by him, Major has also the story and screenplay penned by him. It may be mentioned here that Adivi Sesh first saw the passport size photograph of Major Unnikrishnan in a television channel at San Francisco. From that moment he started collecting all the information about the Major including various paper cuttings, book clippings and what not. He prepared a good and fascinating story of the Major and caricatured his childhood, his love and romantic trait with his childhood friend and classmate Isha. Adivi Sesh built the life of the Major by describing that he had the fascination towards serving the country as an Army / Navy man. Here goes the story.

Unnikrishnan (Adavi Sesh) had in his mind right from his childhood to serve the nation. When someone asks him what he will become after he grows up, his immediate answer is ‘soldier’. Though his parents (Prakash Raj and Revati) try to discourage him initially, upon realizing that he had decided his career as a soldier agrees to him. Later, Unnikrishnan joins the army as a soldier and gets promoted as a Major in no time. However, he is posted as a trainer for soldiers who were recruited in the army. Later, he gets married to his childhood buddy Isha (Saiee Manjrekar) and life moves on happily.

At this juncture, the entire nation gets a shocking news on November 26 (26/11) that some terrorists occupied Taj Hotel and took the guests of the hotel into their custody. Then the government had decided to bring in the Army as the incident took place in the heart of the country and the financial capital of India. Then Unnikrishnan volunteers to lead the team of NSG Commandoes. A soldier can fight at the borders of the country as the enemies could be tracked or watched from where they are attacking. However, this is not the case. There is no idea where the terrorists are hiding and how many were there and what is the condition of the hostages. However, Unnikrishnan dares to move in and corner the terrorists. How he cornered them? What is the position of terrorists? What is the situation of the hostages? Whether the army could safeguard the hostages? What happened to Unnikrishnan? Answers to all these questions form part of the climax.

Performance:

Adivi Sesh gave his career best performance. In the first half, he looked quite romantic and chocolate boy. The entire second half is full of action drama and at the same time the emotional scenes that involved the hero were fantastic. In fact, the audiences have stuck to the edge of their seats during the hour long action drama. The last half an hour is full of emotional gripping drama and the audiences could not move out their eyes from the screen. As a dialogue penned for Prakash Raj – It is not how Unnikrishnan lived but how he sacrificed his life for the country – is the crux of the climax. Saiee Manjrekar, though failed to make her screen presence felt in her debut film “Ghani” of Sai Dharam Tej, perfectly emoted in romantic mood as the childhood buddy of Unnikrishnan and also made her presence felt in each and every scene in “Major”. The other notable characters are Shobita Dhulipala and Murali Sharma who excelled in their characters in the second half.

Technical:

Adavi Sesh owned the story completely and penned a perfect screenplay. Hence he knew each and every scene in the film and hence moulded himself perfectly fit in every scene. Camera work by Vamsi Pachipulusu is superb. Cinematography of the entire action sequence is quite gripping and made the audiences to look with awe. Avinash Kolla’s production designs are noteworthy and we can visualize the production values on the screen. Dialogues penned for the film by the director Sasikiran Tikka himself is another great asset. It is from the question “What does it mean to be a soldier” the hero discovers the answer that the real meaning lies in action. There are some other dialogues like . 'What does it mean to be a human being?' or 'What does it mean to be a Gandhian?' kind of questions make the audiences to remember the real depth in the question. Action by Sunil Rodrigues is top notch. Vinaykumar and Pavan Kalyan did the editing with perfect precision.

Remarks:

Though the story writer took some liberty and portrayed certain scenes in cinematic way, which are far from reality. In fact the film is nothing but a biopic movie of Major Unnikrishnan and hence such cinematic liberties should have been avoided. But one must accept that a film should also have some commercial aspects and it not wrong to make the film worth viewing. You can watch the movie without any doubt. It is worth watching for second time for the action sequences and the second half. Last 20 minutes of the movie are gripping and nail biting.
