Hyderabad, February 28^th, 2017 : Chevella MP Konda Vishweswar Reddy, launched a project to clear Horseshoe weed (Gurrapu Dekka) from Kaidammakunta lake at Hafeezpet, Madhapur, local Corporator Jagadeeshwar Goud, was also present on the occasion, on Sunday at Hafeezpet. The weed has spread across the fifteen acres of the lake, leading to mosquitoes breeding. The local residents have been complaining for long about mosquitoes and the spread of various diseases in the community. Shri Reddy is getting the cleaning work done with his own funds through Justice Konda Madhava Reddy Foundation, run by him, by using a innovative solution to rid the lake of the weed. The local residents and political workers hailed Shri Vishweswar Reddy and profusely thanked him for his out of the box solution, to a long standing problem, which seemed to have no resolution and the official machinery unable to provide any succor, by leaving them to their own fate.

Speaking on the occasion Vishweshwar Reddy said, a few decades ago Hyderabad was known for its beautiful lakes, people used to go to these for recreation, fishing. Today they have turned into stinking sewage pits with Horseshoe weed (Gurrapu Dekka) spreading across the lake, releasing methane gases and dispelling oxygen from the lakes. This in turn kills the fishes and the lake ecosystem and becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Horseshoe weed multiples three times in a short span of a month. The local Corporator Jagadeehwar Goud approached me for funds from MPLADS to address this problem, however I was told that MPLADS funds can be used only for developing infrastructure and not for maintenance. Then when we approached GHMC, they expressed their inability as it is a expensive exercise and costs Rs 60 lakhs to clean sixty lakes in the constituency. Even otherwise by the time the contractors completes the work, the lakes would have been again infested with the weed. Using chemicals to kill the plants would have poisoned the lake. The machines from Switzerland for this purpose don't give a complete solution and maintenance of the machines is expensive. It was then that I brought this innovative solution developed by Justice Konda Madhava Reddy Foundation (JKMRF). Rural youth, mostly 10th class failed, are trained at the Foundation in various technical skills, they welded a machine for this purpose and developed a conveyor belt. The machine mounted on a boat pulls the weed closer to the lake shore and through the conveyor belt these are taken out of the lake. The youth employed by JKMRF have successfully cleaned the Peddamangalaram lake recently. The machine and conveyor belt cost us Rs 2.6 lakhs, as against the Rs 60 lakhs contractors would have charged for cleaning. These boys will be around to clean further, while the contractors would leave after one round of cleaning, he said. We are beginning with this lake and if successful will replicate the work across 60 lakes in the constituency. We will convert this location into a beautiful recreational place for locals, with fencing and road around the lake, parks, chairs, lighting etc. He appealed to the colony residents to participate, own up and maintain the place.

Later Vishweshwar Reddy was felicitated by the people of the constituency at a huge public meeting, to celebrate his birthday. The JKMR Foudation presented cheques to meritorious students from Government Schools in the constituency on the occasion. Jagadeeshwar Goud said, Vishweswar Reddy is always accessible, even if he is in Delhi he is always concerned about the smallest galli in his constituency and constantly trying to resolve problems of the people. On the occasion, his several innovative solutions to address the problems of the people and how they are generating employment for rural youth, was highlighted by speakers. They pointed out that it was he who found a unique solution to the problem of girls dropping out of schools due to unhygienic toilets, through his toilets cleaning vacuum jets. The introduction of soya milk in schools, which has more proteins and nutritious than buffalo milk and costs just about Rs 3 per litre, as against Rs 10 for buffalo milk, amongst others.
