History of Srivari Brahmotsavams

Tirumala, 07 October  2018:  The unique and celestial festival of Brahmotsavams at the hill shrine of Sri Venkateswara Swamy has a known history of nearly  1400 years when it was performed  as a  victory celebration by kings and emperors of those days.

BRAHMA PERFORMED FIRST UTSAVAMS

But the Puranic and Mythological lore contend that  the festival was organised by Brahma, the Creator Himself, under the directives of Sri Venkatswara Swamy who had made Earth as his abode for benefit of entire humanity in Kaliyuga.

The Navaratri Brahmotsavams, the second one in the season will not have events like Koil Alwar Thirumanjanam, Dwajarohanam or Dwajavarohanam,Ratham or the snapana thirumanjanam that were performed during the regular  Brahmotsvam event.

12 BRAHMOTSAVAMS IN A YEAR

According to  Sri  Venugopala Dikshitulu, the chief priest of Srivari Temple,  in the past  there were 12 Brahmotsavams that were used to be observed in a year, with one every month.

FIRST TIME BY QUEEN SAMAVAI

The first recorded Brahmotsavam event was in 614 AD when the Pallava queen Samavai (Perindevi) donated  a silver  idol of Lord which was known as Manavala Perumal and now popular as Sri Bhoga Srinivasa Murthy, wanted the Brahmotsvam to be held in Peratasi(Kanya masam) month.

OBSERVED AS ADI TIRUNALLU AND MASI TIRUNALLU

During the after years, the kings celebrated the Brahmotsavams as victory parades. Vijayaganda Gopaladevudu in 1254, TribhuvanaChakravarti, SriThiruvenkatanatha Yadavarayulu in 1329 observed the Brahmotsavams as 'Adi Tirunallu' and  Veera Pratapa Rayulu in 1429,  Sri  Harihara Rayalu in 1446 named the fete as  'Masi Tirunallu'.  During the regime of  Sri Achuta Raya  in 1530  , the event was popularly titled as  Achutaraya  Mahotsavam .  Some  available historical records show that till 1583, there used to be  Brahmotsavam celebrations during  every month in a year.

ADHIKA MASA BRAHMOTSAVAM

According to the lunar calender, once in every  three years, Adhika masam occurs.  Adhika Masam is an extra month in the Hindu calendar that is inserted to keep the lunar and solar calendars aligned. In the Kanya masam  (Bhadrapada) of the year, the salakatla Brahmotsavam was performed with all rituals prescribed in Vaikhanasa Agama.

Similarly  another Brahmotsavam is performed during the Aswiyuja masam  and is called Navarathri Brahmotsavams.
