Green guards started operating at Pampa


Green Guards have started operating at Pampa to discourage those who leave their garments at the holy river Pampa. Travancore Devaswom Board stated that it is not customary for pilgrims to leave their garments in the holy river Pampa. This deed of the pilgrims in addition to obstructing the flow of the river, it also pollutes Sabarimala and its forests. Pathanamthitta District Administration has initiated to deploy Green Guards at Pampa.

Green guards would look for those who leave clothes while bathing in Pampa and whistles to alert the pilgrims. They work 24 hours a day under the leadership of the Suchitwa Mission at the Pampa bathing ghat. The volunteers of Visudhisena under the Sabarimala Sanitation Society is working as Green Guards. The Green Guards have been deployed on the shore under Mission Green Sabarimala project for the past three years under the aegis of the Suchitwa Mission. 24 green guards have been assigned to duty during the Pampa bathing ghat in two shifts. During the last three years of pilgrimage, the amount of garments deposited on the Pamp River has been halved due to the work of these Green Guards. In addition to this, pocket cards and cloth bags written in five languages are being given to the pilgrims at the Nilakkal Base Camp and Chengannur Railway Station.

Sabarimala ADM Umesh N K inaugurated the functioning of Green Guards and also done the uniform distribution at Pampa. Pampa duty magistrate Kripa NK, Pathanamthitta District Suchitwa Mission Coordinator Radhakrishnan C, Program Officer Ajay KR, Technical Consultant Jerin James Varghese, Chris Global Traders CEO Christopher M, officials and members of the Visudhi Sena were present on the occasion.
