The traditional golden umbrella festival was celebrated as part of the annual Brahmotsavam at the Tirumala on Tuesday evening.
This festival is usually observed on evening prior to Rathotsavam - the mammoth wooden chariot festival. The ritual involves the hereditary trustees from the Pantulugari family, who have, for decades, offered a golden umbrella to adorn the temple chariot.
The golden umbrella is specially decorated and offered following prayers and pujas at the temple's Kalyanakatta (tonsure hall). The present descendant Sri Pantulugari Ramanathan performed Pujas along with the barbers and staff of Kalyanakatta.
The custom dates back to the era of Vijayanagara King and is being continued by the Pantulugari family for generations.
Initially, wooden umbrellas were offered, but since 1952 the tradition shifted to offering golden umbrellas.
Bangaru Godugu Utsavam is symbolic and cherished festival, rooted in centuries-old tradition, that highlights Tirumala's rich spiritual and cultural tapestry.
Board member Sri Santaram, Nayi Brahmana Corporation State Chief Sri Rudrakoti Sadasivam, DyEO Sri Venkataiah, AEO Sri Ramakanth and other officials participated.
